I will admit, this advice may be biased. But, sparkles. Studies show that if you are sparkly, your overall happiness and quality of life improves by 300%. If your costume is sparkly and it sheds glitter everywhere, even better.
2. One size does NOT fit all
One size fits all? ALL?!? Ha! I once made the mistake of ordering a one size fits all mermaid costume. It was pretty, sparkly, and cheap...and I thought it would be stretchy. IT WAS NOT. It was a sad, unyielding mess of sequins.
If you get it in a store, try it on first! If you order it online like I do with all of my costumes, read the customer reviews! They are very helpful in advising you to go a size up or down.
If you are getting a nicer, more expensive costume that you might wear again and it doesn't fit quite right, get it taken in! I once ordered a Rapunzel costume and it turned out being a little too big. I got it taken in for about $10, and they pressed it too! Now it fits perfectly and I wear it all the time.
3. Layer up
Cheap costumes are often see-through. Check in good lighting to make sure your outfit is not transparent! I have a few costumes made of thin fabric, so I usually wear a white skirt and tank top under them. An added bonus is that layering will make dresses look fuller and swishier. Layering will also help keep you warm on a cold Halloween night!
4. Safety First
I often spend my weekends dressed up as the famous mice and traveling from birthday party to birthday party bringing joy to children all throughout the land. Yes, it is magical. However, seeing and walking and breathing are hard. Those are important things. It also gets very hot and very quickly. I'm mostly used to it by now. But can you see out of your mask or your giant mouse head?
Remember, it will be dark on Halloween night and tiny children will be underfoot. SAFETY FIRST.
5. You do You
I'm incredibly lucky that I get to spend every weekend dressing in costumes and eating sugar. But many of us only get to do that once a year! THIS IS YOUR CHANCE. Be a princess. BE A QUEEN. Be a superhero. It doesn't matter whether or not you have the coolest costume at the party. As a matter of fact, you should dress up even if you're not going to a party! Life is short. Dig that unicorn costume out of the closet!
One Last bit of Advice: after taking these bits of wisdom into consideration and finding the perfect costume, be sure to eat lots of candy in it. And if you have any chocolate you don't want, I'll take it.
